There are a lot of people who want to take care of their cars by themselves. Not only is this a great way to save money, it also makes car owners experts on their own vehicles. However, for people who are trying DIY car maintenance for the first time, things can get messy. If not done properly, the task can have costly consequences.
One of these routine maintenance activities is changing oil. Here, we’ll teach you how to properly dispose of motor oil.
As a major pollutant, motor oil should neither be dumped onto the ground nor flushed down a drain. Doing either of the two will land you a fine in many states. This is one of the reasons people go to shops to have their oil replaced, so that they don’t have to handle the disposal of the contaminated material.

To dispose safely of used motor oil, collect it and place it in one container. People usually drain the oil into a drain pan. Using a funnel, transfer all the oil into a separate container with an air-tight seal. If you don’t have a funnel, you can transfer the oil into a sturdy plastic bag first. Then, cut a hole on the plastic and place the hole directly at the mouth of the bottle.
Once you have safely transferred the used oil to its new container, you may visit a nearby toxic waste disposal center where they can dispose of the used oil for you.
