Preventive Car Maintenance: How To Do It

Car troubles, especially at an inconvenient time such as heading for a much-awaited vacation, can be very frustrating. Know, however, that these can be easily prevented by having one’s car regularly serviced. Here are ways to get preventive maintenance for one’s vehicle.

Visual, day-to-day inspections
The “Check Engine” light indicates that something needs to be checked as soon as possible, while if a light goes out it’s best to check fuses and/or replace the bulb. Check the engine oil and filter, too, each time the car gets filled up with gas. Perform periodic visual inspections to find small issues before they grow into bigger ones.

Adhere to oil change schedules
Smaller cars typically entail an oil change upon reaching the first 1,000 kilometers, while for diesel-powered engines the typical maintenance schedule requires an oil change every 5,000 kilometers. Replace oils such as gear and transmission oil on time to avoid poor operation leading to severe damage.

Pay attention to the tires and brake
Rotate the five tires (including the spare) every 5,000 or so kilometers so that they wear out evenly. Always make sure they have the correct pressure to extend their life. Perform regular check-ups, too, on the car brakes to ensure the riders’ safety.

Replace the air filter
The car’s air filter helps keep the air that passes through the engine area and into the inside of the car clean and debris-free. Change it at least once a year, also cleaning out its housing using a rag, cleaning solvent, and a vacuum.

Is your battery okay?
Avoid the hassle of a dead battery by replacing it as soon as its warranty expires. Batteries that come with brand-new cars usually last from two to three years.
